Spring is here and with it brings the inevitable “Spring Cleaning”! It is also one of the best times of the year to list your home for sale if you are considering selling. Most buyers prefer to look at this time of year, especially if they have school age children. Everything looks more appealing when the grass is green and the flowers & trees are in bloom, as opposed to the winter months. So, with that in mind, here is a list of things to consider in your Spring Cleaning routine when preparing your home for sale:
Declutter – throw out, throw out, throw out! It is amazing how much stuff we collect and seem to hold on to for the “when we will need it”. Now is a great time to get rid of old magazines, books, shoes, clothing you no longer wear, expired medications, old makeup, broken items (you know you are not going to fix it…throw it out!), etc. Also take this time to put your personal items like photos & trophies away.
Deep Clean – use a carpet cleaner to get the carpets and flooring deep cleaned, especially in the corners and under cabinets. If you do not own one most retailers have them available for rent. Also, be sure to clean curtains, bedding, furniture and dust all nooks and crannies.
Clean Windows – clean the inside and outside of all of the windows of the house. This small detail will help to lighten and brighten the look of your home. It’s also a good time to replace all lightbulbs with the highest wattage possible.
Paint – when it comes to preparing the house for the sales market, painting is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make. A loud or bright colored room can turn off a potential buyer. Choose soft earth tone paint color to make your home more inviting.
Maintenance & Repair – take a good look inside and out of the home for items that may be broken, damaged or missing. If you are capable of fixing them yourself do so, otherwise call in a professional. Don’t give the potential buyer a reason NOT to purchase the house.
Curb Appeal – be sure to have your lawn manicured, trim bushes & trees back and plant some pretty flowers to help boost your curb appeal. Consider pressure washing, sealing your driveway and staining your deck to improve the look of the house.
Now that everything is clean and ready to sell…get out! Yes, you’ve worked hard now go enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Especially when the house is being viewed by a potential buyer. This way they can see themselves living there and better imagine it as their new home.
